How to Know If Your Autistic Child Understands You

June 26, 2025

Yes, your autistic child likely understands you more than it may seem. They might not always respond in expected ways, but that doesn’t mean they’re not listening or connecting.

Many autistic children process emotions and language differently – but they still feel, notice, and understand.

Communication May Look Different – And That’s Okay

Every child is unique, and this is especially true with autism. Some children may struggle with verbal responses or eye contact, but still understand what you're saying.

Others might take longer to process language or show understanding through gestures, facial expressions, or behaviors instead of words.

Watch for subtle signs – a smile, a shift in body language, or even repeating something later. These are often their way of showing, “I heard you.”

How Can You Tell If They Understand?

  • They follow simple instructions (even if delayed).
  • They respond to familiar words or routines.
  • Their actions or behaviors change after you speak.
  • They seek you out for comfort, play, or support.

Your tone, facial expressions, and body language also play a huge role. Autistic children often pick up on emotional cues even if spoken language is tricky. Keep communication simple, patient, and full of love – it goes further than you think.
